Red Dragon lives up to name

We love when the name of a strain aptly describes its flavor and effect, and Red Dragon lives up to its name with a warm swooping glow.

Created by Barney’s Farm Seeds, Red Dragon is a cross between a West Himalayan Kush and a Brazilian sativa called Utopia Haze. This exotic hybrid won Best Sativa at the 2014 Los Angeles Cannabis Cup and came in second place for Best Sativa at the 2013 San Francisco Cannabis Cup.

We procured our Red Dragon sample from Medicine Bowl Collective. The collective’s flowers are fragrant, flavorful, and pleasingly potent. Medicine Bowl also provides cannabis for Marvina, the new delivery service that curates a different mix of top-shelf strains each month. You can order Red Dragon directly from Medicine Bowl Collective, or Marvina members may discover Red Dragon on their doorstep in a future delivery.

Potency: 23.8% THC, 0.05% CBD.

Appearance: These large, dense flowers are accentuated with voluptuous curves and thick, shapely calyxes. They are well cured, with a nice crystalline layer of trichomes and fiery wisps of burnt orange pistils flickering across the surface of each bud.

Aroma: The initial bouquet is warm and creamy with a sharp bite. Hints of butterscotch sweeten an earthy aroma of cedar wood with notes of soft pine. Breaking the flower open releases candied raspberries and overripe guava, backlit with fuel fumes and toned down with a woodsy finish.

Flavor: Overtones of warm cedar form a delicately creamy blend with pine and hibiscus. The exhalation is sharp pine that lingers with a rich soil aftertaste and more warm cedar in the smoke. Yummy butterscotch mingles with a dash of spice and a side of freshly baked bread, and subtle fuel with a trace of soap lurks in the throat after the smoke has cleared.

Effect: This euphoria-laced buzz starts off light and airy, like a feather drifting in the breeze. The upbeat tone settles into gentle relaxation with a distinctly soaring sensation. It’s clearheaded and calm, synapses firing away into a thick, syrupy atmosphere. In moderation, the happy cerebral high and light body stone are pleasantly comfortable and impressively long lasting, but medicating too heavily may introduce a sense of unease.

Medical Applicability: The uplifting tranquility of this strain lends itself well to alleviating depression, tension, and stress. Pain relief is fairly mild and may be partially attributed to the extreme euphoria. Heightened awareness, clarity, and focus may be beneficial for patients with ADD or ADHD. While not particularly racy or speedy, the strain’s stimulating effect could pose some risk of exacerbating anxiety.

Overall Impression: This powerful flower offers a well-rounded blend of an alert headspace accompanied by a mellow, soothing body effect.
