Most cannabis does not taste like it smells. My wife would tell you that all “pot tastes like pot.” I think she is at least kinda right: Most pot does sorta taste like schwag — or slightly sweetened schwag. The readily available top tier at The Green Door, however, is most definitely an exception.

The Green Door has always been my favorite dispensary. It’s close to my house, and it’s always sold the best cannabis in the city — and maybe beyond. I have dear friends who host cannabis-tasting events, and cannabis from The Green Door almost always wins (the rare exception being when an incredible cultivator shows up with private stock unavailable to 99 percent of us mere mortals).

And acquiring it is an experience that’s been improved. The dispensary recently removed the bullet-proof glass at the budtender counter. I much prefer this: I am a patient, not a criminal. And once at the counter, I genuinely feel accepted and appreciated. Other dispensaries have staff that can be thuggish, pretentious, and rude. No matter how busy the budtenders are here, they absolutely take the time to answer all of my questions. And if they don’t have the answer, they will pull a manager into the discussion. I can’t stress how valuable this is to the medical patient.

The menu here is divided into two sections: high grade and “green-tag special.” The green-tag material is discounted, but not because it’s B-grade; the dispensary just paid less for it.

I once found a tiny bit of mold in a bag of green-tag special Granddaddy Purple. When I brought the bag in to show the problem, the dispensary immediately — as in before they’d finished with me — pulled the rotten meds from the shelves. They generously offered me another bag, but doubled the quantity and upgraded the strain.
I left with Cadillac Purple that day. It’s a strain I never would have purchased (the name turned me off) but I’ve since found that it produces the best effect for my medical need. Now, I almost exclusively buy that strain.

For those who need variety in their lives but value some continuity, the strain selections here are consistently in stock, and high quality. This is important for the medical user. Some strains can exacerbate symptoms. Finding the same strain to produce the same effect is an integral part of effective treatment.

Another selling point of The Green Door is the upstairs smoking lounge, Lounge 847. It is not to be missed. Those of us with children, like myself, may no longer have paraphernalia or a safe place to medicate. That makes it nice to go to a place like this to use a clean bong or a vaporizer. I love playing pool here, but the most important thing is to be able to walk into a large room and see people from all walks of life smoking. Whatever your affliction, community bonding often plays an important role in healing and recovery. For many, the stigma still attached to medical cannabis makes this treatment option too difficult to discuss with certain family and friends. Not so here.
