DRUG WAR OFFENDER: ACADEMY OF ART UNIVERSITY

Last month, we said we’d identify by name drug-testing employers who threaten marijuana users with termination. We weren’t kidding.

This month, we bring our first offender: local favorite Academy of Art University.

An art school forbids weed use? It’s true. According to an anonymous reader, AAU has a strict drug-free workplace policy. “I had to take a urine test to get the job,” according to our tipster — who, before economic survival was at stake, was an “outspoken advocate” who helped get Prop. 215 on the ballot. “Illegal” marijuana use is outlawed under the school’s stock “drug-free workplace” policy, which is lifted straight from the federal Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988. That same document doesn’t forbid binge drinking. “Despite their stance on alcohol, at the Christmas parties, they have an open bar,” our tipster tells us.
