Obama comes out for medical marijuana in Sanjay Gupta’s ‘Weed 3’

President Barack Obama is stepping up and expressing his full support for medical marijuana.
Despite telling VICE in a March interview that marijuana legalization is not a priority, President Barack Obama now supports the prescribed use of medical marijuana. The president reveals his newfound weed support in an interview with CNN’s chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta, which will air on Sunday night, reports the Daily Caller.
Gupta’s interview with the president will be featured in “Weed 3: The Marijuana Revolution,” the latest installment in Gupta’s special television documentary series.
During the interview, the two discussed the CARERS act — the recent bipartisan bill on the Senate floor that would legalize medical marijuana on a federal level.
Gupta asked Obama directly if he supports the bill.
“You know, I think I’d have to take a look at the details, but I’m on record as saying that not only do I think carefully prescribed medical use of marijuana may in fact be appropriate and we should follow the science as opposed to ideology on this issue, but I’m also on record as saying that the more we treat some of these issues related to drug abuse from a public health model and not just from an incarceration model, the better off we’re going to be,” Obama responded.
The president then went on to describe how drug abuse treatment would likely benefit addicts greater than jail sentences.
“You know, one of the great victories of this country has been our ability to reduce incidences of smoking, increase the incidences of seat belt use,” Obama told Gupta. “You know, we save tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of lives every single year. We didn’t throw anybody in jail; we just made sure that they were well-informed and if somebody has an addiction, we made sure that we made it easy for them to get help.”
Gupta’s latest “Weed” special is the doctor’s latest effort to shed light on the factual proof of marijuana’s medicinal value. Gupta aired his first “Weed” special in 2013, after spending several years vocally opposing marijuana legalization.
“We have been terribly and systematically misled for nearly 70 years in the United States, and I apologize for my own role in that,” Gupta said.
